Towards 2030: Reshaping Europe's Energy System

EUSEW 21 FACEBOOK 820x312 01

Every year the European Commission (Directorate-General for Energy and CINEA) organises the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) – a unique opportunity for stakeholders across Europe’s energy community and beyond to come together, share ideas and build new connections.

Taking place from 25-29 October 2021 under the theme ‘Towards 2030: Reshaping Europe’s Energy System’, participants can follow sessions and network with leading researchers, policymakers, and pioneers in clean energy to hear about their vision for a more sustainable future in Europe.

The Week consists of a 3-day digital policy conference, the EU Sustainable Energy Awards Ceremony, the Debate with Ambassadors, the second European Youth Energy Day, as well as 1:1 video meetings, virtual stands, and other networking activities. Participants will also have access to an extended programme and digital sustainable energy events, known as Sustainable Energy Days, which will take place all over Europe throughout the months of September and October 2021.

Also at this year's EUSEW, REScoop.eu is out in full force!

We are an official EUSEW 2021 partner organisation, recognised for our vital work in helping the EU reach its clean energy and sustainability goals.

Our president, Dirk Vansintjan is part of an ambitious team of digital ambassadors that share expertise and support EUSEW discussions across Europe and beyond.

Policy Conference

  • A Citizen-led Renovation Wave | 25 October 2021, 16h00 - 17h30
Accelerating home renovations in Europe, and the targets laid out by the European Green Deal, will not succeed without adequately involving and supporting the 195 million households that live in those homes. This session showcases how citizens across Europe – both tenants and homeowners – are already participating in renovation projects and highlights what can be done at the European and Member State level to support this growing citizen-led renovation movement. This will be followed by a discussion on how to ensure that the Renovation Wave delivers healthy, safe, affordable, and energy efficient homes for all.
Organised by REScoop.eu and Housing Europe
Panel participation of Sem Oxenaar, moderated by Sara Tachelet
  • Energy community engagement in local flexibility markets | 26 October 2021, 9h00 - 10h30
In a regulatory context defined by decreasing direct support for renewable energy, energy communities increasingly focus on direct self-consumption of generated electricity. A too narrow focus on self-consumption risks leading to sub-optimal investments and a cost-ineffective energy transition. Hence, it is of importance to encourage energy communities to interact with the wider energy system by providing local flexibility services to the distribution system. In this light, this session focusses on the challenges and opportunities of engaging energy communities in local flexibility markets and aims to identify key action drivers and regulatory solutions.
Organised by European Commission, DG ENER
    Presentation by Roland Tual

  • Buildings at the heart of the EU’s new energy system | 26 October 2021, 14h00 - 15h30
This policy session will shed light on the potential that buildings offer for a successful transformation of the energy system by 2030 by empowering citizens at all levels and enabling the scale-up of holistic energy renovations. The speakers will present inspiring initiatives and best practices that are already in place at neighbourhood, city and community level. The presentations will highlight ways to empower residents to play a role in the energy transition while responding to their needs, especially lower-income households.

    Presentation by Sem Oxenaar

Extended programme

  • Empowering citizens in the energy transition: Behavioral change and the challenge of scaling up Energy Communities | 22 October, 13h30 - 15h00
Energy Communities (ECs) have been showing great potential for the past two decades as a trigger of social innovation and citizen engagement in the energy field. Their scaling up to support a more decentralized and flexible Energy Union is proving to be necessary but challenging. The speakers and the audience will seek to find consensus on how to best overcome the challenges for scaling up energy communities and for maximizing the adoption of more sustainable energy practices.
Organised by NEWCOMERS, COMETS and REScoop.eu
    Presentation by Stavroula Pappa
  • Renewable Energy Communities to Boost the Energy Transition | 27 October, 11h00 - 13h30
Renewable energy communities (RECs) have multiple benefits, from reducing energy poverty to bringing together neighbours and creating a sense of belonging. RECs are essential for the green energy transition and to reach the EU’s goals of climate neutrality; yet, what is needed to establish these networks and ensure they reach their full potential? Through a panel discussion and interactive session with leaders of existing RECs, this event encourage the establishment of RECs across Europe, bringing together experienced leaders of renewable energy communities from the project’s network, energy experts, and others who are interested in adopting such practices, to explore the potential of energy communities and establish a mainstreaming roadmap.

About EUSEW

The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) is a month-long series of activities to build a secure energy future for Europe. It brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power.

Launched in 2006 by the European Commission, EUSEW was organised by the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) until 31 March 2021, and as of 1 April 2021 is organised by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), in close cooperation with the Directorate-General for Energy.
