Accelerating the clean energy transition – towards lower bills and greater skills

Unnamed 1

Every year the European Commission (Directorate-General for Energy and CINEA) organises the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) – a unique opportunity for stakeholders across Europe’s energy community and beyond to come together, share ideas and build new connections.

This year, EUSEW takes a hybrid format, on the theme of 'Accelerating the clean energy transition – towards lower bills and greater skills', with speakers and participants in Brussels and online.

Alongside joining the Policy Conference from 20-22 June 2023 with sessions that will focus on sustainable energy issues, and debate new policy developments, best practices and sustainable energy ideas, attendees can also:

REScoop.eu & EUSEW

Also at this year's EUSEW, REScoop.eu is out in full force! We are an official EUSEW 2023 partner organisation, recognised for our vital work in helping the EU reach its clean energy and sustainability goals. Our president, Dirk Vansintjan is part of an ambitious team of digital ambassadors that share expertise and support EUSEW discussions across Europe and beyond. Below you can find an overview of events that REScoop.eu will be participating in:

Policy Conference

  • Renewables and energy efficiency: finding the right mix to reduce fossil fuel dependency | Wednesday, 21 June 2023, 09:30 - 11:00 CEST
This session addresses the ongoing debate about the optimal mix of renewables and energy efficiency to attain climate neutrality mid-century, considering multiple impacts on ecological, social, and economic sustainability.
In order to capitalise on these different perspectives, the session will start with a keynote from MEP Ciarán Cuffe and six 5-minute interactive presentations deep-diving into different aspects of the trade-offs between renewables and energy efficiency. The invited speakers will then be invited on stage to debate the trade-offs in greater depth, discussing the optimal mix of renewables and energy efficiency to reach climate neutrality as well as central hurdles to its achievement are discussed, such as split incentives, lacking skilled workers for the transition, etc.

Panel participation by Heleen Schockaert, project manager REScoop.eu
  • Empowering energy communities: building capacity for social innovation | Wednesday, 21 June 2023, 14:30 - 16:00 CEST
This session will explore non-regulatory issues and barriers related to project design, development and implementation, as well as the design of suitable policy measures, such as one stop shops, to help overcome these barriers. Contents of the session will be based on experiences from energy communities engaging in different activities, as well as that data, policy analysis and guidance materials elaborated by the Energy Communities Repository and the Rural Energy Community Advisory Hub.

Panel participation by Josh Roberts, senior policy advisor REScoop.eu
  • Community-proofing the EU’s energy system by rebalancing roles and resources | Wednesday, 21 June 2023, 16:30 - 18:00 CEST
The objective of this session is to discuss how local energy ownership can contribute to a just and secure energy transition. This is especially important now that the EU's dependence on imported energy sources and the implications of this on energy prices have become even more visible in light of the energy crisis. The session will focus on how the active participation of citizens and local governments in the energy market can be empowered through the implementation of the Clean Energy Package provisions for energy communities and be impacted by the upcoming Electricity Market Design reform. Responding to EUSEW’s theme, special attention will be paid to how energy communities could play a part in delivering a cost-efficient and green energy supply, reducing energy poverty and promoting energy security for all.

Panel participation by Stavroula Pappa, policy advisor REScoop.eu and SCCALE 203050 project partner
Presentation by Dimitris Katsaprakakis, Minoan Energy, member of REScoop.eu and LIFE LOOP project partner
  • How to engage more consumers in the energy transition | Wednesday, 21 June 2023, 16:30 - 18:00
The energy price crisis pushes consumers to renewables. But many cannot invest because of being tenants or living in a multi-family home. The session illustrates business models allowing all consumers to benefit from renewables.

Panel participation by Josh Roberts, senior policy advisor REScoop.eu
  • Citizen Energy: transition to renewable community heating and cooling | Thursday 22 June 2023, 09:30 - 11:00 CEST
Some countries excel at renewable heating and cooling, whereas others still have some way to go - how do we replicate successful community heating and cooling across the EU? The 'Citizen Energy' session will give citizens, policy makers, and energy communities the know-how about citizen-owned renewables, and how to transition to collective heating and cooling. It offers practical information on Community District Heating, examples of it, and what we can do to replicate it across the EU. REScoop.eu, together with EnergieSamen and Austria Solar hope to inspire you to participate in a citizen-owned renewable heating network, and make sure that once again citizens have control over their energy and its profits.

Presentations & panel participation by Felix Kriedemann, project manager REScoop.eu and Siward Zomer, board member REScoop.eu
Moderated by Sara Tachelet, communications manager REScoop.eu

Energy Days

Local authorities supporting energy communities: Sharing experience on citizen engagement | Monday 19 June 2023, 14.00 - 16.30 CEST.

In the context of the current geopolitical situation, energy market realities, and the REPowerEU plan, the LIFE_LETsGO4Climate project participates in accelerating the European clean energy transition. Energy communities represent the opportunity for citizens, local authorities and small enterprises to get directly involved into energy initiatives. But how does that work in practice? How can local authorities promote and support the emergence of citizen initiatives? REScoop.eu, Energy Cities and the Centre Val-de-Loire Region are inviting all involved stakeholders to a roundtable session on citizen engagement. Come and share your experience on how to engage a diverse audience into energy projects!

The event will be participatory and will entail exchange of experience on favouring the emergence of citizen initiatives in a given territory, reaching out to citizens and maintaining their commitment; accompanying citizens in the creation of a fruitful energy project.

Location: Mundo-B, Rue d'Edimbourg 26, 1050 Ixelles, Belgium

Organised by Région Centre-Val-de-Loire, REScoop.eu and Energy Cities
