Participate in the Moths to a Flame art installation
Moths to a Flame will turn calls for urgent action on the climate emergency into a magnificent mass-participation art installation at COP26 (November 2021, Glasgow).
2021 is a really important year for action on climate change. Later this year, the United Kingdom is hosting the United Nations Climate Conference in Glasgow - also known as COP26. What gets decided by world leaders there will define the future that today’s young people inherit. The time is now to drive action on climate change, and show people that by coming together we can make a difference.
For this reason, the Art and Energy Collective and Plymouth Energy Community have been planning the momentous artwork since 2019 and invite everyone to join this creative response to the climate emergency. As the European federation of citizen energy cooperatives, at REScoop.eu we support this action and encourage you to get involved.
How to participate
There are two ways to contribute to the art installation.
Firstly, you can help us record 10,000 messages calling for urgent action on climate change. You can record your personal message to world leaders at COP26 on the Moths to a Flame website. If you prefer to write your message rather than to record your voice, you can do that too.
Another option is to make a moth from plastic milk bottles and send it to Art & Energy by post to be added to the beautiful mass-participation installation in Glasgow. We are aiming for 20,000 moths, so we count on you! You can find instructions on how to make your own moth on the initiative website.
Moths have something to tell us about our relationship with energy; there are over 2,500 species of moth in the UK and most of them live in a mysterious nocturnal world so we don’t notice them much. They are secret pollinators and a vital part of our ecosystem. The UK has seen a drastic drop in the number of moths in recent years owing to pollution, farming methods, reduction in habitats and light pollution. This indicator species tells us a lot about the health of our planet.
The Art and Energy Collective team will be running free moth making sessions, but also other events to explore energy and the world of moths in order to better understand ourselves and the impact of our actions through creativity.
